follows a baseball scout in charge of a Florida training camp where aspiring ballplayers annually get a two-week tryout. The aspirants include the son of a Polish immigrant who defies his father to secretly pursue a baseball, rather than a legal, career. The baseball scout’s niece comes down from the home office in New York and is attracted to the quiet ballplayer of Polish ancestry.

The widower tries to raise money by betting on dog races and lying to his brother about a gravely ill son.
